SAINT LUKE-

+ + + back SAINT LUKE- Great Evangelist and Kind Physician/1st century/Feast: Oct,18-#09 fr:Dear Saint, how can anyone fail to love you who so touchingly described in your Gospel Christ's infancy, the role of His most devoted Mother Mary, and Christ's compassion for the downtrodden; and later on gave us in the Acts of the Apostles the history of the Infant Church. *You went from being a physician of bodies to a most compassionate physician of souls.Although you were different from Saint Paul, your missionary companion, you were also like him in your eagerness to convert all people to Christ. St:That is true.Paul was a Jew,whose parents came from Tarsus. I was born a pagan at Antioch, and in that city I became a Christian--although not in the miraculous way Saul was converted on the road to Damascus. fr:As a methodical historian, you tell us at the beginning of your Gospel that you "carefully traced the whole sequence of events" in the life of Jesus, from the beginning. And you wrote the Gospel to show how reliable was the instruction that had been given to a certain "Theophilus" and Christians in general. St:I also considered it important to emphasize the great role of the Holy Spirit in the Incarnation and in the powerful impetus given to the leaders of the Church on the first Pentecost. He descended upon and brought grace to Mary and the Apostles as well as a good number of converts. *The Church today needs a new Pentecost.Pray daily for this grace. fr:Dear Saint, you gave us a kind of Gospel of the Holy Spirit in the Acts of the Apostles. It is fitting then to quote here a prayer inspired by the Holy Spirit which you placed on the lips of the priest Zechariah and which has become a prayer used by the Church and Christians in the official Morning Prayer of the Liturgy of the Hours. pr:Blessed be the Lord the God of Israel because He has visited and ransomed His people. He has raised a horn of saving strength for us in the house of David His servant, As He Promised through the mouths of His holy ones, the Prophets of ancient times.Salvation from our enemies and front the hands of all our foes.(Lk 1:68-71) fr: Dear Saint, help us to be devoted to the Father, the Son,and the Spirit, as you were. Give us a love for the Word of God and a constant desire to meditate on it. *Enable us to imitate the meek Christ,to have compassion on our fellow human beings, and thus be worthy of the name of Christian. back
