+ + + - back PREFACE-#a1 *GOD is almighty and could achieve whatever He desires without any help of His creatures.Nevertheless,He has chosen tomake use of weak,fallible instruments such as we human beings are,not only for procreating the human race but also for teaching and helping us to serve Him properly and become His beloved children for all eternity. *At one time courses in history were principally records of wars,of the cruelty of human beings toward one another,and of their meansess in relation to God.Yet despite foreseeing all this,God chose to create rational creatures endowed with free will.For He knew that with His help a great number of human beings would become faithful,true adorers and lovers of their Divine Creator and charitable toward their neighbor. *Thus,a more complete history of the human race reveals God's governnlent and guidance,His merciful love of members of His chosen people,and the unbelievable self-sac-rificing love of the Son of God.Though He was God from all eternity,He chose to be conceived a man in Mary bG the Holy Spirit,and to die on the Cross for the salvation of all. *Jesus Christ is the Holy One of God.Not only did He give us the example of a most holy life but He also gave us the supernatural power of grace enabling us to be adopted children of God, "other Christs".through being imitators of Christ,and members for all eternity of the Divine Trinity of Father,Son,and Holy Spirit.This is what it means to be a Saint. *Many Christian Saints are now living a blessed life with God, and it is certain that they are greatly interested in us who are still walking as pilgrims upon earth. Though mostly unseen and unheard,they can inspire us by what we know about their saintly lives and they are always ready to intercede for us withGod. This is in accord with God's will and we are foolish when we neglect such assistance. *What a variety of followers of Christ there are: those who died as youngsters or in old age,those who were Saints in their childhood like Saint Stanislaus Kostka,and others who became converts just before death,like Saint Dismas,the good thief who died with our Lord; Saint Peter who denied Christ and Saint Paul who persecuted Him in His members;Saint Augustine who fled from Christ for the world till he was overtaken and Saint Elizabeth of Portugal who found Christ in the world. *Inasmuch as Christ was unable to sin and Mary never sinned, we find it easier to relate to and imitate the Saints who both could and for the most part did sill (albeit lightly in most cases). Because they are so much closer to us sinners,and were successful in becoming holy followers of Christ,their example and their words and prayers can more easily encourage us as we endeavor to bear our cross and follow in the steps of our Divine Lord. *What those frail human beings fulfilled we too can achieve if like them we make use of assiduous prayer,devout assistance at Mass, reception of the Sacraments,and meditative reading of the Scriptures. And last though not least,if we recall the inspiring things in their lives and implore them often to intercede for us. *Such is the purpose of this unpretentions book.By dialogues with the Saints we hope to enable Catholics to learn to follow them closely and in so doing to follow their Master and the Master of us all--Christ Who is the goal of our life.
